Whether they were built as a fortress, home or vanity project, there’s nothing quite like a castle to capture the imagination.

While Germany and France have some impressive castles, Wales is actually thought of as Europe’s ‘Castle Capital’.

There are more castles per square mile in Wales than in any other country, making it a fantastic destination for tourists who want to see as many as possible.

Wales was once heavily contested for territory and this led to an explosion of castles with fortresses from Norman, native Welsh and English competitors popping up all over the land.

There are more than 600 castles in Wales, ranging from ruins to fully intact and functioning homes. Where are the country’s best?

Caernarfon Castle in Gwynedd in North Wales was built by Edward 1 in the 13th century on the site of a former Roman fort.

The castle was built at the same time as the town walls and quay and the huge project took 47 years to complete. Nowadays, tourists can explore the castle’s rooms and head up on the roof for spectacular views.

Another Edward 1 project, Conwy Castle offers incredible views from its battlements and tourists can also explore the royal apartments.

A medieval castle built by a Welsh prince, Powis Castle is under the care of the National Trust. The gardens are perhaps the top attraction at this idyllic spot. Don’t miss the 17th century Italianate terraces.

Caerphilly Castle is the country’s largest and the second biggest castle in the whole of the UK. Built by the English in the 17th century, it’s a majestic spot with four siege engines.

Snowdonia or Eryri is famed for its natural beauty but tourists should also keep an eye out for Castell y Bere which was built by Llywelyn the Great in the 1200s. The castle is located in a picturesque valley.
